Oleksandr Usyk’s manager has dismissed Tyson Fury’s offer to serve as a potential backup opponent for Anthony Joshua, adding another layer of uncertainty to plans for a highly anticipated heavyweight clash involving Joshua and Usyk.
Fury has expressed an interest in being available as a replacement should Joshua’s scheduled opponent be unable to compete. However, Usyk’s team has indicated that the proposal is not something they are prepared to pursue.
The development comes as attention remains focused on the possibility of a major heavyweight showdown involving Joshua. While Fury and Joshua have long been linked with a potential fight, the situation surrounding the division continues to develop.
Usyk, meanwhile, remains one of the leading figures in the heavyweight division. The Ukrainian became undisputed heavyweight champion after defeating Tyson Fury, adding another significant achievement to a career that already included undisputed status at cruiserweight.
His success against Fury established Usyk as the dominant champion of his era, while also intensifying interest in what could come next for the heavyweight division.
Joshua has also built a significant résumé at heavyweight. The former unified world champion has shared the ring with some of the biggest names in the division and remains one of boxing’s most commercially significant heavyweights.

Fury, a former heavyweight champion himself, has also been involved in some of the division’s biggest fights in recent years. His willingness to step in as a backup opponent highlights the continued interest surrounding matchups involving Joshua and the leading heavyweights.
However, the response from Usyk’s manager suggests that Fury’s proposed role is not currently part of the team’s plans.

For Joshua, having a reliable opponent and a clear preparation schedule remains important whenever a major fight is being considered. A late change of opponent can significantly alter preparation, particularly at heavyweight, where styles and physical attributes can vary considerably.
For Usyk’s team, the decision also reflects the importance of controlling their own plans rather than relying on a contingency involving another elite heavyweight.
The wider heavyweight picture remains closely watched because of the number of major names still capable of creating significant fights. Joshua, Usyk and Fury have all been central to the division’s biggest storylines, making any development involving them likely to attract considerable attention.
At this stage, the rejection of Fury’s backup proposal does not necessarily determine what will happen next for any of the fighters. It does, however, make clear that Usyk’s camp is not viewing Fury’s offer as the solution to the uncertainty surrounding Joshua’s plans.
The next steps for Joshua, Usyk and Fury will therefore remain under scrutiny as their respective teams determine the most suitable opponents and future opportunities. With all three heavyweights still capable of commanding major attention, the decisions made now could have significant consequences for the division’s next chapter.
